In the story an old woman working as a home help to a 'Literary gentelman' reflects on the trials and tribulations of her long life and comes to a startling and ironic onclusion. This first version was written for the periodical 'The Nation and Atheneaum', and appeared in Vol. 28, No. 22, on 21st February 1921, pp. 742-43. It was first published in book form as part of Katherine Mansfield's anthology 'The Garden Party', 1922 [see Kirkpatrick C252].
