Lot Essay

In his day, Nanko was as well known a painter as Tani Buncho(See L. Roberts, The Dictionary of Japanese Artists, p. 119).

Kogyo was principally a painter but also designed Mokuhan bijinga and Ruso-Japanese war prints. He often used the name Sozan -also pronounced Shuzan in prints(See Merritt and Yamada, Guide to Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints, p. 152).
