Lot Essay

Other fauteuils of this model were sold in these Rooms, 1 November 1989, lot 80 and Sotheby's Monaco, 25-26 June 1983, lot 223. The bold carving of the arms and the outset headings to the legs relate to a suite of furniture with carving by Jean-Baptiste Rode and gilding by Aubert supplied by Boulard in 1778 for the salon of the Château de Bagatelle for the comte d'Artois (see La Folie d'Artois, 1988, pp. 126-127, fig. 11).
