The Fantasia festivities occur at the peak of the Moslem celebration of Moussem. The Moussem lasts for three days and is a festival which encompasses elements of the sacred and the profane: part religious and part folkloric display. The earlier part of the celebration focuses around prayers and readings from the Koran. Tents are erected, followed by elaborate feasts with music and dancing. The Fantasia is the culmination of the celebration. Arab horsemen, dressed in festive costumes, assemble in a large open space to recreate a jousting tournament which is witnessed by enthusiastic spectators.
