One night at a party for 200 guests at the Beverly Hills home of Tom and Anita May, Lana and her date Turhan Bey were dancing when her newly divorced husband Stephan Crane cut in and drew her aside. He pointed out that she was wearing his mother's diamond, which he had given her as an engagement ring. When he insisted she give it back the two men, dressed in dinner jackets, started swinging. In disgust and dismay Lana slipped the ring off her finger and threw it into the bushes. The two men and many guests spent the rest of the evening on their hands and knees. The next day the Mays called to say their gardeners had found the ring in the shrubery. She never returned his mother's diamond. She had Ruser reset the ring and went on to wear both these earrings and the ring in most of her movies.
