With bound masts, yards with stun's'l booms, standing and running rigging and deck details including carved warrior figurehead, hair rails, anchors, catheads, gratings, capstan, bitts, deck rails, companionways, guns and two wood ship's boats with bone thwarts. The planked and pinned hull has black strakes, open gun ports and carved stern and quarter galleries. Stand and glazed case with mirror base and light over. Brass plate inscribed 'HMS Bellerophon 1818 length 192ft Breadth 49ft, Tonnage 2042.

Lot Essay

Bellerophon, built 1786 by Graves and Co, Findsbury as a 74 and commissioned 19.7.1790 fought at the Battle of the Glorious 1st June, the Battle of the Nile and the Battle of Trafalgar. On July 15 1815 she accepted the surrender of Napoleon and conveyed him first to Torquay and then to Plymouth. She was broken up at Plymouth 1834 after being renamed 'Captivity' in 1826, and serving as a prison hulk.
