Lot Essay

Berthe Morisot married Eugène Manet, the brother of Edouard Manet in 1874. Their daughter Julie was born in 1879 and appears frequently in Morisot's paintings. In 1886 Morisot and her husband took an active role in organizing the eighth and last Impressionist group exhibition. They divided their time between a home in Bougival and a house on the rue de Villejuste (now rue Paul Válery) in Paris. When staying in the city she often painted and drew in the Bois du Boulogne, the likely setting for the present work.
