Lot Essay

Chartier is interested in the psychology of love; he also digresses on morals, behaviour, psychology, politics and other subjects. The whole book is written in a medieval manner, concisely formulated questions are followed by thoughtful answers, some ironical, some sceptical. Some are brilliant aphorisms which show Chartier as a fore-runner in the great tradition of La Rochfoucauld, Chamfort and others. The translator is not known.
