Lot Essay

Important for its woodcuts in high renaissance style, foreshadowing the baroque, assigned on the title to Giuseppe della Porta (1520-70), called G. Salviati, one of the most prominent Venetian painters and illustrators of his era. However, the cuts appear to have been published after his lifetime, the earliest edition traced being that at Venice in 1598 (NUC 144, 277). This volume is likely to be a re-issue of the 1598 with a cancel title.
