Lot Essay

Whether as an artist or a teacher, Léger always stressed the importance of drawing. "'Draw first,' he taught his pupils. 'An exact drawing with lines, lines and nothing else. Small parts first. Hands, feet, then human forms, and next comprehensive compositions.'"
(J. Cassou and J. Leymarie, Fernand Léger Drawings and Gouaches, London, 1973, p. 117)
