Lot Essay

Bernardino Baldi from Urbino (153-1617) poet, historian, mathematician and diplomat, was Abbot of Guastalla and Secretary to the Duke of Urbino. His poetry includes the great epic Della Nautica which is considered his major work, dealing with ship building, the art of navigation and trade by sea. It is also important for linguistic reasons, as he used many words, for instance names of fish and shells, not in the vocabulary of the Accademia della Crusca.
