A fine copy of one of the finest illustrated editions of Ovid to be printed in Germany. The illustrations derive from those which Salomon designed for the Lyonnese Ovid editions. But style, technique and size have undergone considerable changes at the hands of Vergil Solis (1514-62). The slim and elongated figures of Salomon have been changed to more realistic human proportions; the details are more distinct. Solis's lines are stronger, and have been more carefully printed, so that the general impression is quite different from the French model. Johannes Posthius (1537-97), the editor of this volume, was also known as a translator into German of Aesop's Fables. Ovid's translator, Johannes Spreng (1524-1601), was a poet from Augsburg.
