Appolonius was a 'philosophising mystic with orientalising tendencies'. Beroaldus published a Latin translation of the work in 1501, in Bologna. This edition is regarded as an 'Aldine counterfeit' edition even though it is not based on any previous Aldus publication. It is ascribed by Baudrier to Balthazar de Gabiano who introduced italic to Lyon and was the printer of numerous other Aldus counterfeits.
