Lot Essay

A collection containing the Latin poems of three eminent poets from Ferrara: Gianbattista Pigna (1530-1575), historian, and friend and protegé of Duke Alfonso II to whom the book is dedicated; Ludovico Ariosto of whose youthful Latin poems this is the Editio Princeps; and Celio Calcagnini (1479-1541) poet, philosopher and astronomer. In Cacagnini's poems, the notorious p. 191 is intact, with only the two words 'Cunni' and 'Culi' in the headlines inked out by censorship.
