E.H. Pinto in his book, Treen, London 1969, plate 100, no.D, records that small and medium sized wooden mortars and their pestles were usually made of lignum vitae, on account not only of its hardness, sound heart and impermeability to liquids, but also because its imaginary medicinal qualities were supposed to benefit the mixture being compounded.
