These exceptionally early rugby caps are purported to have belonged to two brothers: H. Moore who played for Ireland against England in the second Irish International of 1876 and W.D. Moore who played for Ireland against England in the fourth Irish International of 1878, the first time that an International had been played at Landsdowne Road. An Irish Football Union was founded in Dublin in November 1874, and a Northern Football Union of Ireland was formed in Belfast in January 1875. For Ireland's first International in February 1875, each Union nominated 10 players, but several of those selected failed to turn yp for the game and those that did had never played with or even met each other before so with such casual organisation it is not suprising that Ireland should lose the first game, and the next nine matches played between the years 1875-1880. The first Irish Captain, George Stack was one of the few early Irish players with any skill but unfortunately he accidently poisoned himself with an overdose of chloral in November 1876, so all in all the Irish Union did not have a very promising start to its career.
