Lot Essay

This carving receives its inspiration from an engraving in the Il Calloto Resusciato, published in Amsterdam in 1716, of a Callot dwarf bagpiper. Portrayal of dwarves in Continental Europe totally went out of fashion by the 1770's and most carvings were executed during the first half of the 18th century.
