A well engineered 1/5th scale 5in. gauge model of the De Winton 0-4-0 quarry locomotive 'Dorothea', a slate wagon, a coal trunk and a ballast wagon built by T.R. Holland. Loco dimensions -- 27 x 26¾in.(68.5 x 68cm)
With wood lagged brass bound braized copper boiler with fittings including water and pressure gauges, safety, blower, whistle, injector and clack valves. Engine details include twin vertical cylinders with Stephenson's link reverse, cylinder head and ratchet operated lubricators, footplate controlled draincocks and pipework, eccentric driven feed pump and by-pass, Reynolds chain drive to coupled axles, injector, whistle, hand operated brake gear with wooden brake blocks and water tank. Finished in yellow, red, black and polished brightwork with etched name and makers plates; the four wheel freight vehicles finished in grey and black

Lot Essay

Messrs De Winton of Caernaevon built many locomotives of this type between 1860 and 1902 to replace horse traction in the N. Wales slate quarries. They can haul heavy loads round tight curves, the model being very suitable for garden railway operation
