Lot Essay

After having spent the previous two years largely concentrating on his bronze sculptures, de Kooning returned to painting in 1975 with a renewed sense of confidence and vigor. He had been living in East Hampton for more than a decade, and the environment he had created for himself became the focus of his vision. In the series of paintings that he created from 1975-1977, de Kooning achieved 'a grand synthesis of the motifs that had formed his art since he left New York: the figure and the East Hampton landscape (D. Sylvester, R. Shiff, M. Prather, Willem de Kooning Paintings, Washington D.C. 1994, p. 197).
