Lot Essay

First printed by Plantin in 1634. The original plates of the Rubens title and the engravings for this Jesuit emblem book are still in the possession of the Musée Plantin in Antwerp. Funck notes that the retouching of the plates was entrusted to André Pauwels who was paid the enormous sum of 268 florins for completing the job.
