Lot Essay

Appolonius applied to conic sections the discipline that Euclid had given to geometry. The above is the first printing of his work, in which the terms ellipse, parabola and hyperbola are introduced for the first time, although it 'represents only four of his eight books. They were not printed in the original Greek until 1710 at which time the three remaining books were added in Latin translation. Halley further added a restored version of the lost eighth book' (Dibner).
