Lot Essay

'One work of the Berlin period revealed Euler as a graceful (if somewhat too pious) writer, the celebrated Letters to a German Princess, composed to give lessons in mechanics, physical optics, astronomy, sound, etc., to Frederick the Great's niece, the Princess of Anhalt-Dessau. The famous letters became immensely popular and circulated in book form in seven languages.' (Bell, I, p.166)
