Lot Essay

Pietro Santo Bartoli (1635-1700) was one of the outstanding engravers of his time, particularly known for his designs and imitations of ancient art, he was nick-named the 'antiquary' of the Pope and Queen Christina of Sweden. He first produced the present set of engravings, without text, in 1677. They were based on the original paintings in the Codex Vaticanus, the earliest known 4th century manuscript of Virgil. They were first published with text in 1741.
