Lot Essay

This illustration is for an epic poem Pan Twardowski by Adam Mickiewicz (1798-1855) and was published in 1834. Mickiewicz is one of the most renowned Polish poets of the 19th century. A favourite of Polish children, Pan Twardowski, is the story of a Polish nobleman who sells his soul to the Devil and escapes to the Moon where he can still be seen sitting on the crescent.
