Lot Essay

The four-masted steel barque Holkar was stated to be the largest sailing ship in the world when she was launched in 1888. Built by Harland & Wolff in Belfast, she was also the last sailing vessel to be ordered for the famous Brocklebank fleet. Registered at 3073 tons gross and 329½ feet long, she began her trading life with Brocklebank's on their Calcutta run. Ousted from this route by steam, she turned to the grain trade until 1901 when she was sold to D.H. Watjen of Bremen and renamed Adelaide. Captured by H.M.S. Caronia early in the Great War, she was returned to British ownership and survived until 1925 when she was broken up in Holland.
