Lot Essay

The barque Anglo-Norman was built by Russells of Port Glasgow in 1876 for Frost, Cook & Co. of London. Registered at 822 tons, she was 192½ feet in length and had a 32¼in. foot beam. Changing hands several times during her life, she passed into Norwegian ownership in 1899, coming under the command of Captain Carlsen in 1907. On 26 September 1914, whilst making into Kaipara Harbour, New Zealand, she was struck by a sudden heavy squall and driven aground, eventually becoming a total loss. Sold with the lot is a typed transcript of an eye-witness account of her stranding, together with an original postcard photograph showing her distressed condition prior to breaking-up.
