Lot Essay

William James was a keen explorer and huntsman. He led many expeditions on board his yacht the Lancashire Witch. These two paintings commemorate one of the expeditions and were commissioned by his friend Henry W. Gore Booth as a gift on the occasion of his marriage to Evelyn Forbes, daughter of Sir Charles Forbes, Bt. in 1889. In this painting one can see the crew saving a steam launch from being crushed by ice.
