Woodstock is situated in a Caktskill valley between Overlook and Ohayo Mountains northwest of Kingston, New York. At the beginning of the century, Woodstock, because of its remoteness, natural beauty, cool temperatures and clean air, became a summer escape for residents languishing in New York City. It was for these reasons that Woodstock was chosen as a site for an art colony that would become a haven for some of the most influential artists in the history of American art.
