Lot Essay

Gerrit Hondius (1891-1970) came to America during World War I and studied at the Art Students League with Max Weber and Andrew Dasburg. The present work depicts the interior of Hondius' house in Woodstock where he spent his summers. Characteristic of many Woodstock houses of that time, the interior is simply furnished with exposed, heavy wooden beams and a central woodburning stove.
