Lot Essay

Ernest Fiene and his younger brother, intrigued by the radical modernists, Charles Rosen and Andrew Dasburg, built their studios in Woodstock in 1920. Fiene's style during the 1920's and 30's bore many similarities to that of Rosen's, infusing elements of cubism into a narrative scene while not wholly obscuing its realistic qualties. Fiene drew his subject matter from the local environment of Woodstock, such as rolling fields, orchards, barns, and in the present example, farmland.
