Lot Essay

Martin, a well-known Californian social realist painter, first visited Woodstock in 1932 from Los Angeles. In 1946 he moved to Woodstock permanently after having served as a war time correspondent for Life Magazine. Influenced by American modernism and Picasso's cubism, Martin's mature painting style, as evidenced in the present work, was figurative, but stylized with an emphasis on pattern.
