A mid Victorian ebonised, bone-inlaid and giltmetal mounted pedestal desk inset with blue and white jasperware plaques, with raised superstructure fitted with drawers and pierced brass gallery above recessed leather-lined writing surface and three frieze drawers above three drawers to each pedestal, on plinth bases, one drawer stamped James Winter & Sons, Soho, London, 151/153/155 Wardour Street, the locks stamped Hobbs, London, Machine Made Lever -- 54½in. (138cm.) wide.

The firm of James Winter is first recorded in 1823 but continued to trade until 1870 and it is likely that they retailed rather than manufactured furniture. See Dictionary of English Furniture Makers, Beard and Gilbert pp 992-3
