Lot Essay

A letter from Warder H. Cadbury dated August 20, 1995, states that "Tait did not always sign and date his pictures, or make a record of them in his register, especially if he was away from his studio in Manhattan. In this case, the paintings were probably done in the Adirondacks, as the dogs belonged to his local guide, Calvin Parker. Even though they were good friends, it may well be that Tait made the paintings as an alternative to a cash payment for Parker's services."

This painting will be added to the permanent archive of A. F. Tait's work at The Adirondack Museum at Blue Mountain Lake, New York, and included in any future supplement to Warder H. Cadbury's book on Tait.
