CLEEVE (ALEXANDER, binder) -- The History of the Old and New Testament in cutts, London, by W.R. for Iohn Williams, 1672, 12mo, engraved title and 56 plates, some heightened in gilt, by F.H. van Houe, pages ruled in red (lacking all after 2A12 [The Book of Job, Ch. XLII], A6-B12 slightly frayed at outer margin and partly detached, occasional light soiling), contemporary crimson morocco by Cleeve, signed in gilt at foot of upper cover: 'ACleeve Fe[cit]', covers tooled in gilt with an all-over 'fanfare' design of black-stained strapwork, each cover comprising 4 panels containing a gilt vase of flowers, and other small foliate tools, surrounding a centrally-placed flower-head, spine gilt, with 4 raised bands, and elaborately tooled in the 5 panels with three different designs of gilt tooling, stained strapwork, and leaves (upper joint partly split, small hole at fool of spine, spine neatly repaired at head and foot, covers slightly darkened, extremities rubbed), g.e. [cf. Wing H2173B]; sold as a binding not subject to return.
