Lot Essay

Kuhnert's travels were not limited to the African continent. After a brief stay in Berlin in 1906, he made a journey to Ceylon and India. As had been the case with Kuhnert's earlier hunting and sketching safaris, this trip afforded him the opportunity to study the wildlife unique to the Asian region. The tiger, a feline only rivalled by the lion in size, strength and ferocity, was one of the ultimate trophies for a big game hunter and was equally admired for its striking beauty. Kuhnert's many sketches were subsequently worked into major compositions when he returned to Germany.
