Lot Essay

Munnings painted his wife Violet on many occasions, and in this scene she is discernable as the figure on the left. This picture fits into the period of Munnings work that spanned from 1919 with Model's Day Out, to 1930-1, with From my Window.

Munnings and Violet McBride were married in 1920, a year after Munnings purchased Castle House, their home in Dedham for over thirty years. Their marriage was a great source of pleasure for the artist, who wrote in his autobiography, "...--all that a man can do--is to little avail if he has not a good wife." (Sir Alfred Munnings, The Second Burst, Bungay, 1951, p.84, (see lot 233)).
