"The St Cross Hospital, near to Winchester, the ancient Capital of England, wad founded by Henry de Blois (Bishop of Winchester and brother of King Stephen) in the year 1136, for thirteen decayed men.
The Wayfarers Dole, a horn of Beer and a piece of white Bread, is still given as of old, to all applicants at the Porters Hatchway in the Porch of Cardinal Beauforts Tower".
