After receiving photographs of the box, Bill Holm wrote to the owner about it on November 25, 1992, as follows:
"The box is very well painted...this box may have originally been what I call a 'deep bowl,' that is a food container typified by an undulating rim, without a lid.

The design is very well done, and quite typical for a mid- to late nineteenth century box or bowl. One very unusual and interesting detail is the stylized face with wide open mouth. The other stylized face in the lower right corner of another side is much more typical in proportion and style. The box is in very good condition. Many of these are very worn, with the painting much obliterated."
