GEORGE BERNARD SHAW (1856-1950)
A 2pp. a.l.s., dated 29 Fitzroy Square W. 3rd January 1893, to Ernest White, answering his enquiry on the prospects of a career as a dramatic critic. Shaw states that no 'real work' can be done for the London theatrical papers as 'they are mostly owned by theatrical agents and the notices are really puffs and not criticisms. Actors buy them to read their names: that is all. I have never written for such a paper and have no more interest with them than I have with the Queen.' He concludes by advising White to resist his 'vocation to the uttermost - read the appendix to my "Quintessence of Ibsenism" which exposes the shady side of the critics lot.'
