SIEGFRIED SASSOON (1886-1967)
A 2pp. a.l.s., signed with initials, Heytesbury House, Wiltshire, 20.10.47., to H.M. Tomlinson, vigourously expressing his frustrations with critics and current international publishing policies: 'Since 1918, it seems, I am a minor poet, & something of a backslider from my pristine fiery period ... You know the critics game better than I do. And have suffered from them. As did T.H. [Thomas Hardy] & Meredith - now secure on Parnassus, where you and I can do no more than salute their supremacy ... What are the Americans up to? This morning I received a catalogue from The Viking Press ... I enclose a page - "Portables"! Literature unloaded like canned meat from Chicago. Is this Civilisation? ... I see that Shinwell says ... that we do not want another war. Is THAT news? Tommy, it really is funny, isn't it?'
