THOMAS PIERREPOINT
A collection of six a.l.s., dated Town End, Clayton, Nr. Bradford, Yorkshire, 16th November 1923 - February 1924, one discussing the forthcoming execution of 'William Downs who is fixed for Thursday the 29th November 1923, at Mountjoy Prison Dublin' and thanking Pierrepoint for the engagement, another discussing his route to the Prison: 'I will make my way straight to the Prison Sir, as it does not do to hang about and advertise yourself on these jobs'; another dated after the execution saying 'I kept hearing conversation about the execution at Mountjoy but I never let on even the sailors on board were looking out for the hangman ... I expect they thought of seeing me with a lot of luggage but I never carry any with me only in my pocket a pair of pliers, a two foot ruler and tape measure', in the next letter he states his annoyance at not being paid expenses as the man he was to execute had been reprieved.
