The present example of The Scout is a reduction of the monumental group erected in Penn Valley Park, Kansas City, MO. in 1917. A model of the group had been awarded a gold medal at the Pan-Pacific Exposition held in San Francisco two years earlier.

The last in a series of four models depicting the Indians' relationship with the White Man, Appeal to the Great Spirit was exhibited at the National Sculpture Society in 1908 and at the Paris Salon of 1909 where it was awarded a gold medal.
The Gorham Foundry was authorized to cast reductions of both bronzes in three sizes - The Scout: 30 inches (7), 20 inches (44) and 8 inches (84) and Appeal to the Great Spirit: 37 inches (9), 20 inches (107) and 9 inches (285).
