Mathew Noble, (1819 - 1876) born in Hackness, Yorkshire.

Mathew Noble, a prolific sculptor studied under John Francis in London as a young man. However, it was not until 1856 that he became prominent to a wider public with his monument to Wellington, erected in Manchester.

Of a delicate constitution, his death would appear to have been hastened after his son was killed in a railway accident. Another son, who had shown great promise as a sculptor, had died shortly before.

The Art Journal of 1876 records a touching obituary to him.
