The attribution to William Bullock of this Antique hanging lamp is based on a black basalt urn bearing the patent stamp W. Bullock, PUB. July 1, 1805, sold in Christie's Great Rooms, 4th July 1991, lot 3.
The signature on this urn has facilitated the attribution to William Bullock of other items with similar ornament, formerly the property of Lord Kinnaird, such as a Regency clock sold in Christie's Great Rooms, 6th July 1989, lot 118 and a pair of flaming cassolette vases sold in these rooms, 21 November 1990, lot 162.
In 1805, William Bullock announced the opening of his Egyptian Hall in Gore's General Advertiser, as W. Bullock, Jeweller, Silversmith and chinaman at the Museum and Bronze figure Manufactory, Church Street, Liverpool, advertising a new assortment of every article in the Bronze Figure and Ornamental business.
In 1812, William Bullock opened his celebrated Egyptian Hall Museum in Piccadilly, London, where he sold both bronze and basalt vases.
