H.M.S. Sutlej, 2,066 tons was laid down in 1847 as a 4th rate sailing frigate mounting 50 guns and launched in 1855. Placed in reserve upon completion, she was converted to screw propulsion (in 1859-60) before she had seen any real sea service and, after a leisurely fitting-out, she was commissioned at Portsmouth in September 1862. Her first and only posting was as flagship in the Pacific (China Station) and when she returned home in the summer of 1867, she was again placed in reserve before being broken up in 1869.
