Lot Essay

In addition to his well-known "Fighting Ships", Fred Jane was a talented ship painter who produced numerous illustrations for various other marine puplications. This representation of the three Royal Navy squadrons based in and around American waters may have beeen intended to reassure British public opinion anxious about the build-up of U.S. Navy ships in the West Indies during the Spanish-American War of 1898.
