Lot Essay

R.M.S. Berengaria, 52,117 tons, was built for the German Hamburg-Americman Company and completed as Imperator, the largest ship in the world, in April 1913. Laid up during the Great War, she passed into Allied hands in 1919 as part of Germany's War Reparations and was sold to the Cunard Line in 1921. Extensively refitted and then renamed, she entered service as Cunard's flagship Berengaria in May 1922, whereupon she embarked upon her trans-Atlantic career which lasted until she was so badly damaged by fire in March 1938 that she was subsequently scrapped.
