The wooden barque Glengairn was originally rigged as a ship when she was launched in 1863. Built by W. Hood & Co. in Aberdeen for A.
Nichol & Co. to trade on their South American routes, she measured 185 feet in length and had a 33½ foot beam. First registered in Aberdeen (her home port) at 894 tons, she was subsequently sold to the Norwegian owner H.S. Jacobsen in the early 1880's and thereafter sailed from Flekkefjord under the Norwegian flag. On 25 August 1893, whilst en route from Flekkefjord to Philadelphia in ballast, she was involved in a collision about 30 miles off Barnegat which resulted in her sinking.
