Lot Essay

The cruiser H.M.S. Grafton, 7350 tons, was built by the Thames Iron Works, launched in January 1892 and completed in October 1894. Measuring 360 feet in length and capable of a top speed of 20 knots, she and her sisters proved so reliable that they all saw an unusually large amount of sea service for ships of their size. Flagship on the China Station from 1895-99, Grafton was among several of her class of cruisers rebuilt to serve in the Dardanalles in 1915-16 and for which she received a battle honour. Surviving the Great War despite extensive further service, she was broken up in 1920.
