Guy Wiggins' Fifth Avenue in the Snow, of the late 1940s or early 1950s, depicts a favorite subject of the artist - the New York Public Library situated along one of the city's grandest avenues. Designed by Carrère and Hastings between 1897 and 1911, the library was one of the first truly monumental buildings boasting a grand entranceway and elegant terraces. Depicted from the south and occupying the left side of the composition, the library's facade is animated by the famous pair of lions which were designed by Edward Potter.
